kulabhaktyārcanaphalaṃ vada me karuṇānidhe || 1
Here is the ninth chapter.
The Radiant/Auspiciouis Goddess said:
‘‘(Oh), Lord of the kula (- tantric community), I want to hear (about) yoga,
(about) characteristic(s) of (a) master of yogins*, (about) the fruit (i.e. boon) of
worship with kulabhakti**, (oh), Ocean of Mercy, tell me (about these
things).‘‘
глава.
,,(О),
Translator’s notes:
* i.e., of the best among yogins.
** Kulabhakti means devotion/devotional
service practised in accordance with the kuladharma (- tantric kaula religion)
and it encompasses devotional love towards (/devotional service to) the kula (-
tantric community).
*

īśvara uvāca
śṛṇu devi pravakṣyāmi yanmāṃ
tvaṃ paripṛcchasi |
tasya śravaṇamātreṇa yogaḥ sākṣāt prakāśate || 2
The Lord (Śiva) said:
‘‘Listen, (oh), Goddess, I (will) tell you what you ask(ed) me
about, just by hearing that, yoga* really becomes manifest.**‘‘
Translator’s notes:
* i.e. ‘‘union‘‘/unity/oneness of one’s
soul with the Spirit, as it is said further, in 9. 30.
** i.e. becomes realised by (an appropriate) listener.
* т.е. йога

dhyānantu dvividhaṁ proktaṁ sthūlasūkṣmaprabhedataḥ |
sākāraṁ sthūlamityāhurnirākārantu sūkṣmakam || 3
Meditation is said/declared to be in fact of two kinds, (i.e.,
it is) divided into gross (meditation) and subtle/fine (meditation). Meditation with
a form is said/declared to be gross and (meditation) without form (is
said/declared to be) subtle/fine.

sthirārthaṁ manasaḥ kecit sthūladhyānaṁ pracakṣate |
sthūle’pi niścalaṁ ceto bhavet sūkṣme’pi niścalam || 4
A gross meditation (/some (practice) of a gross
meditation) is supposed for the sake of steadiness/steadfastness of mind. (A
practioner’s) consciousness can become/becomes fixed/steady as by gross
(meditation), so also by subtle
(meditation).

karapādodarāsyādirahitaṁ parameśvaram |
sarvatejomayaṁ dhyāyet saccidānandaniṣkalam || 5
(One) should meditate on the supreme Lord (as) having no
hands, feet, belly, mouth/jaws (/face) (etc), consisiting of all
(-pervading/-illuminating) fire/light, (being the) True (/Real) Conscious Bliss
without parts (/without a form).

(He) neither arises (/rises (unlike the sun)/becomes increased) nor vanishes (/perishes/dies/sets (unlike the sun), neither grows (/waxes (unlike the moon)/extends) nor wanes (unlike the moon) (/nor becomes diminished/destroyed/perishes), (He) shines by Himself (/of His own accord), certainly illuminating others without effort.
Kulārṇava-tantram 9.7 (- definition of brahmajñāna/- определение brahmajñāna):
anantaṁ gatabhārūpaṁ sattāmātramagocaram |
manasā mātrasamvedyaṁ tajjñānaṁ brahmasaṁjñitam || 7
(When the) endless/boundless/infinite nature (/‘form‘ (without
a form)) (of that supreme/transcendent Lord/God)
bereft of a shining, being the totality of existence (/being nothing but (the true)
existence/being)), imperceptible/unattainable/inaccessible (by sense organs/senses),
is known/realized by mind (as) the only (Object of cognition), (then) that (supreme/transcendent)
knowledge/cognition is called (/known as) (the true knowledge of) God/Absolute
</the absolute (knowledge)>.
Kulārṇava-tantra 9. 8 (- definition of yogi who (really) knows yoga/-
praṇaṣṭavāyusañcāraḥ pāṣāṇa iva niścalaḥ |
parajīvaikadhāmajño yogī yogaviducyate || 8
(A person who) wanders (/roams/moves) with ceased (/lost/dissapeared) breathing (and, being) firmly established/steady/unchangeable like a stone <in meditation>, knows/realizes only one (/the only/the exellent) Abode of the Supreme Self is called (/considered as a) yogi who (really) knows yoga.
Translator’s note:
Due to the reason that even highly experienced yogis aren’t really able to stop breathing completely remaining physically alive and capable of walking etc, I think the phrase ‘‘wandering/walking about/roaming/moving with ceased/lost/disappeared air/breathing‘‘ can be practically understood in the sense that a yogi should diminish frequency of respiration to a minimum by prolonging and stopping
it for a longer and longer time what is considered in yoga beneficial for the meditative cognition/realization of
the Supreme Spirit/Self/Reality.
Kulārṇava-tantram 9. 9 (- definition of samādhi) in version ङ/(- определение samādhi) в

The meditation on the Shining of the only Object (which*) constantly stays like a still/calm
ocean (and which is) devoid of its form <- of any form>, is considered as (/called) samādhi
(‘‘union (with that Shining/Object)/intense absorption (in that Shining/Object); completion/accomplishment (of the whole practice)‘‘).**
Translator’s notes:
* - grammatically corresponds here to
the Shining.
** In this verse, the definition of samādhi
in Yoga-sūtra (of Patañjali) 3. 3 is partly rephrased and supplemented with the
metaphor. (Yoga-sūtra 3. 3: tadevārthamātranirbhāsaṁ svarūpaśūnyamiva samādhiḥ ||3. 3|| - ‘‘Shining of That,
really the only Object (of meditation), as It (- that Shining) were devoid
of its form <- of any form>, (is) samādhi.‘‘)
(Yoga-sūtra 3. 3: tadevārthamātranirbhāsaṁ svarūpaśūnyamiva samādhiḥ ||3. 3||

(The supreme/transcendent) reality shines (/appears)

a practitioner>; <on entering> (that supreme/transcendent,) self- illumined reality, <a true/real
yogin> can immediately become (/becomes) identical with
that (supreme/transcendent reality).

One who stays/abides in the states/conditions of sleep
and wakefulness as if asleep,
(being) devoid of inhalation and
exhalation, is decidedly/certainly freed/liberated
(from the worldly existence) indeed.
Kulārṇava-tantram 9. 12 (- definition of jīvanmukta/- определение jīvanmukta):

indeed.

(One who) neither hears, nor smells, nor perceives by touch, nor sees (anything), (who) knows neither pleasure nor sorrow, <whose> mind is devoid of any conception/desire/intention, <who> neither knows anything, nor becomes aware of (anything)/perceives (anything), (being motionless and impercipient) like a log/piece of wood, (whose) soul/spirit is really absorbed/dissolved in Shiva, is declared here (- in this teaching/world) to be (the one) who stays in samādhi (‘‘union‘‘ of one’s own soul/spirit (jīvātman) with the supreme/universal Spirit (paramātman)/Shiva/God).

yathā jale jalaṁ kṣiptaṁ kṣīre kṣīraṁ ghṛte ghṛtam |
aviśeṣo bhavettadvajjīvātmaparamātmanoḥ || 15
As water thrown into water (or) milk (thrown) into milk (or) ghee (thrown) into ghee (becomes not different from it), so likewise, <when a practitioner achieves samādhi (‘‘union‘‘)>, there remains no difference between (his/her) individual soul and the Supreme Spirit.

yathā dhyānasya sāmarthyāt kīṭo’pi bhramarāyate |
tathā samādhisāmarthyādbrahmabhūto bhavennaraḥ || 16
As even a worm <- i.e. a bee’s larva> becomes a bee by the power of concentration (/meditation) (on its parent bee), so likewise, a human can become (/becomes) identical with
God/Absolute by the power of samādhi
(‘‘union‘‘ of an individual soul with the Supreme Spirit/God).
Translator’s notes:
In this metaphor, an individual soul/human is likened to a ‘worm‘<- i.e. a bee’s larva>, and the universal Supreme Spirit/God/Absolute
is likened to a bee.
(Another variation of this
metaphor is found in Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 7.1.27-28, according to the numeration given at https://gretil.sub.uni-goettingen.de/gretil/corpustei/transformations/html/sa_bhAgavatapurANa.htm , or 7.1.28-29,
according to the numeration given at https://vedabase.io/en/library/sb/7/1/28-29/ .)
What concerns the term samādhi (‘‘union‘‘/intense absorption/accomplishment/completion) – its definition/explanaition
was given in Kulārṇava-tantra 9. 9.

As ghee extracted
from milk, (which, when) thrown
into the (milk), does not (become mixed with the milk) as
before (- anymore), so
likewise, the self can become
separated from gunas (material qualities/attributes) (and not mixed with them any more), (it is thus) said/declared here (- in this teaching/world).

As one who stays in the dense darkness does not see
(/observe) anything here (- in the <visible> world), so likewise, a yogin
(who is deeply absorbed in meditation) really does not see (/observe) the
manifest/visible world (which is) also unobservable/invisible (for him).
Kulārṇava-tantram 9. 19 (- an indication of (a real/successful) meditation/-

As,

a yogin who is deeply absorbed in meditation) are
open, (he also really does not see (/observe) the manifest/visible world) – this (/this here) (is an)
indication (/(a) characteristic) of (real/successful) meditation.

(The true) yoga (‘‘union‘‘) (is attained) neither due to
the pādmāsana ( ‘‘lotus (sitting) posture‘‘ - fully cross-legged sitting

at the tip of one’s nose. Those who are proficient in yoga designate/declare yoga as oneness/unity
of one’s soul with the Spirit.

Translator's notes/
* The word ''ātma-'' means both: '' (of) oneself'' and ''(of the) Self/Spirit'', and 'ātma-'' as ''(of the) Self/Spirit'' is often used as a synonym for ''brahma-'' ((of) God/(of the) Absolute). In this verse, the concepts ''brahma'' (God/Absolute),
''aham'' (I/self) and ''ātma'' (oneself/Self/Spirit) are united and identified
with each other.

Translator's notes/
* (Using) nirmālyam (flowers (/offerings)) left after a sacrificial ceremony) is prescribed in the fifth sūtra of the Pāśupata-sūtra (- an early doctrinal text of the pāśupatas). However, here, in the 9th chapter of the Kulārṇava-tantra, in the context of denial of a high value/neccesity of any ritual/external practices, it is said to be abandoned in favour of the non-dual internal self-identification with the ''Ever Auspicious (Omnipresent) God''.
